Pool CPR sign requirements in QLD: how to make sure yours is compliant

Pool CPR sign requirements in QLD: what the sign must show, its minimum size, where to mount it, and how to check yours is compliant before an inspection.

A CPR resuscitation sign mounted beside a backyard pool fence

Every Queensland pool and spa needs a compliant CPR sign. The pool CPR sign requirements in QLD are simple. The sign must show how to perform CPR, starting with 30 chest compressions followed by 2 breaths. It must be at least 300mm by 300mm, weatherproof, and easy to see from near the pool. Here is how to check yours.

What must a pool CPR sign show in QLD?

It must show how to perform CPR, and CPR must start with 30 chest compressions, followed by 2 breaths. It must also include a clear statement on how to act in an emergency. For example: call 000, stay with the person, and give first aid. A sign that shows breaths before compressions does not meet this rule.

The QBCC sets out every requirement on its CPR signs page.

How big does a pool CPR sign need to be?

At least 300mm by 300mm. It must be made of durable, weatherproof material, so the steps stay readable through years of Gold Coast sun and rain. If your sign has faded, cracked or peeled until the steps are hard to read, replace it. A sign no one can read does nothing in an emergency.

Where should the CPR sign go?

Attach it to the pool fence or barrier, or display it near the pool. It must be easy to see for anyone near the pool. The QBCC suggests placing it close to where you would lift a person out of the water, such as near the shallow end or the steps. That keeps the steps in view when it counts.

A few practical tips from Rob’s inspections:

  • Face the sign toward flat ground where you could lay a person down, not over a rocky garden bed.
  • Keep furniture, plants and pool gear from blocking it.
  • Mount it high on the fence, so it never becomes a foothold for a child.
  • Check you can read it from the spot where you would perform CPR.

Do spas and portable pools need a CPR sign?

Yes. The pool safety standard applies to any pool or spa that can hold 300mm of water or more. That includes portable and inflatable pools. The standard covers the barrier, the gate and the CPR sign. A spa with a lockable lid still needs a compliant barrier, and the sign comes with it.

How do I check my CPR sign is compliant?

Run five quick checks. Does it start with 30 compressions, then 2 breaths? Is it at least 300mm by 300mm? Can you read every step clearly? Is it attached to the fence or displayed near the pool, in clear view? Does it tell you how to act in an emergency? Five yeses means you are set.
